The New York State Men's Mid-Amateur Championship is the state's championship for the career amateur. First contested in 1984 at Glens Falls Country Club — three years after the USGA established the U.S. Mid-Amateur — it was created for the player who never stopped competing, but who now does it around a job, a commute and a family.
Eligibility is simple and deliberate: 25 years of age or older, a USGA Handicap Index of 8.4 or lower issued by a NYSGA member club. What follows is 54 holes of stroke play over three days, with a cut after each of the first two rounds.
The list of champions is a record of New York's most durable amateurs. Don Allen, a two-time Walker Cup player, three-time Masters invitee and inaugural NYSGA Hall of Fame member, won the second and fourth playings of this championship. Jim Roy holds the record with four titles. Luke Hobika won his two seventeen years apart, in 1998 and 2015. Tim Spitz was runner-up at the 2009 U.S. Mid-Amateur before winning here in 2012. Most recently, Kyle Downey won back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025.
In 2026, the 42nd playing brings the championship to the Country Club of Buffalo, Donald Ross's 1926 design, for the first time.
